Get Rid of Harmful Household Products Safely at Sanitation-Organized Events

By Forum Staff
To help residents dispose of harmful household products safely, the City Department of Sanitation hosts solvents, automotive, flammables, and electronics – SAFE – disposal events throughout the year in all five boroughs.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, DSNY will be in the Astoria Park parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. According to the agency, because SAFE events are so popular, be prepared for a line. If you intend to drive, you should enter from Ditmars Boulevard onto 21st Street. DSNY indicated that there will be a walk-in area available for residents taking public transportation.
The department emphasized that only NYC residential waste is accepted at SAFE disposal events, and no commercial vehicles are allowed. Residents must provide proof of residency in the five boroughs, such as a State driver’s license or utility bill.
Accepted items include:
• Automotive products such as motor oil, transmission fluid, and batteries
• Personal care items like unwanted medicines or cosmetics
• Thermometers
• Syringes (clearly labeled and packaged in a “sharps” container or other leak-proof, puncture-resistant container)
• Household products such as pesticides, paint, hazardous cleaners, compact fluorescent light bulbs
• Electronics
