From the Rockaways to Howard Beach to Astoria and every community in-between, the World’s Borough on Monday marked the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the United States.
“Today we mourn the loss of our fallen heroes and we honor the valor of those who put themselves in harm’s way to save others,” said City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) at the memorial at Tribute Park on Beach Channel Drive.
“Times of tragedy show us strength & resilience of American spirit, a spirit that can never be extinguished, though they tried,” tweeted U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, who attended ceremonies in Maspeth, Glendale, and Bayside.
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, 2,606 people died in the attack on the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. Among the victims were 343 members of the City Fire Department and 23 members of the NYPD.
“They caused destruction and death, but they can never demoralize us. Through an act of hate, we learned the world is full of loving people,” said Police Commissioner Jim O’Neill. “The lives lost 16 years ago, and the many taken in the time since, stand for what is good and right. Our way of life is definitely worth fighting for.”
