Queens Borough President Melinda Katz (l.) and Sarah Murphy, director of Development for the Coalition for the Homeless, recently posed with backpacks and other school supplies that were dropped off at Borough Hall by contributors donating to “Project: Back to School,” an annual initiative organized by the coalition that began last month and culminated on Sept. 1.
For the fourth summer in a row, Katz’s Office collected donations in a drop-box placed in the lobby of Borough Hall. The items will be provided to children who reside in City homeless shelters and will help these kids get the school year off to a good start. According to the coalition, more than 105,000 of the city’s schoolchildren were homeless at some point in the last school year.
