Later this month, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) and State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Office will be hosting two “Smart Seniors” sessions in Howard Beach and Far Rockaway, the assemblywoman recently announced.
The workshops, the officials noted, are designed to help seniors protect themselves from fraud and abuse.
“This is a really helpful presentation; I hope seniors choose to take advantage of it,” Pheffer Amato added. “We’ll be working to get the word out. We’re excited to host the attorney general, who has built his career on consumer protection, as he brings his considerable resources to bear in one of the districts with the highest concentrations of senior citizens. From investor fraud to the recent Equifax data breach, too many of our elders have been the victim of scams of opportunity. These victims are our mothers and fathers. They deserve all the support and defense we can give them. I’m thrilled to be able to bring them the best, most current information on how to protect themselves, direct from the state’s top law enforcement official!”
You do not need to RSVP to attend the workshops; both are open to the general public. The first presentation will be held on Monday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m., at the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Services Senior Center, located at 155-55 Cross Bay Blvd. in Howard Beach. The second session is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 11:30 a.m., at JASA Roy Reuther Senior Center: 711 Seagirt Ave. in Far Rockaway.
“We must empower senior citizens with information that will help them spot a scam before they are victimized,” Schneiderman said. “I’m proud to stand with Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato in our commitment to protect all New Yorkers, especially those who are at a heightened risk of being targeted by fraud.”
The AG later added that anyone who believes that they are victim of fraud should not “hesitate to report it to my office at (800) 771-7755.”
