The City Police Department recently honored the 106th Precinct with the 2017 Social Media Award for Creativity.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan, Deputy Commissioner for Strategic Communications William Andrews, and Yael Bar-tur, director of Social Media and Digital Strategy recognized the south Queens command for its funny Facebook video, “Welcome to 106 Facebook,” starring Officers Mark Competello and Daniel Levy.
“Social media is a tool that we can use to reach out to people in the community,” Capt. Brian Bohannon, commanding officer of the 106, told The Forum this week. “There are many members of the community that do not attend our civic meetings or community council meeting, so we use the social media platform to connect. We post relevant information such as wanted photos, crime alerts, events within the precinct and so on. The fact that we were honored to receive the Social Media Creativity Award means a lot to us. Not only do we want to be informative, but we like to use a little bit of humor to catch the public’s attention. Officers Levy and Competello have been instrumental in using social media to reach that part of the community that we may not have in the past.”
