Fabio E. Abreu, of Brooklyn, has been convicted of the July 2016 attempted burglary of a Bayside residence equipped with a video surveillance system.
Abreu was apprehended the day after the failed burglary when a 911 caller – having seen the photograph still that the homeowner posted on social media – made a report that he saw the wanted suspect in a nearby park.
District AttorneyBrown said, “This defendant attempted to break into a private residence that was prepared and waiting for his arrival. As the defendant jumped over a locked fence, looked in multiple windows and attempted to open the back door, all of his actions were being recorded on a home video system. Stills from the video were later uploaded to a social media site which resulted in his apprehension and conviction.”
Abreu was convicted last week on charges of second-degree attempted burglary and third-degree criminal trespass before Acting Queens Supreme Court Justice Gene Lopez, who set sentencing for January 9, 2018, at which time Abreu faces up to seven years in prison.
Trial testimony shows that Abreu was observed on video jumping over a locked fence of a residence located on 223rd Street on July 24, 2016, and entering the backyard.
While in the backyard, Abreu was observed trying to open windows and doors in an attempt to gain entry into the residence.
At the residence’s backdoor, Abreu noticed the surveillance cameras. In an attempt to cover his tracks, he went to the front door, where he triggered the Ring.com (doorbell camera) that captured his face.
The homeowner posted a still picture of Abreu on a community Facebook page. The following day a 911 caller made a report that he saw Abreu in a park.
