A City cop who used to serve and protect the residents of the 106th Precinct recently helped deliver an impatient – and healthy – baby boy inside his family’s borough residence, according to Police Department officials.
On Saturday, Jan. 27, Officer Elizabeth Leudesdorff, now assigned to the 113th Precinct, and her partner, PO Krystal Bermudez, responded to a 911 call for a woman in labor within the confines of the 113. According to Leudesdorff’s account, once they entered the home, the anxious father directed the cops to a room where the pregnant mother was lying on a bed. While Bermudez coordinated with EMS, Leudesdorff – a mother of three and stepmother to one – determined that the woman’s contractions were two minutes apart and “the baby was well on his way.”
Leudesdorff then coached the woman through the birthing process. Once the baby boy emerged, Leudesdorff gently tapped him on his back in order to kick-start the flow of oxygen and ensure that his airways were clear. After the 6-pound, 10-ounce newborn began crying, Leudesdorff proudly handed him off to his mother to hold for the first time.
Leudesdorff described this moment as the highlight of her career.
“Helping deliver a beautiful boy, hearing that first cry, putting him on his mother and seeing the joy and relief on her face,” she noted, “it’s something I will never forget as a mother and a cop.”
Later that day Leudesdorff and Bermudez brought flowers to the mother in the hospital and congratulated the young family on the new addition.
