Members of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, community leaders, and residents joined City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park; second from r.) on Thursday in honoring BCVFD Chief Christian Hoobs by dedicating the northeast corner of Church and Noel roads “Chief Christian Hoobs Way.”
Hoobs, who was elected BCVFD Chief of Department in 1912, held the position until he died on June 14, 1917, after suffering a heart attack while responding to a fire. He was 48.
Hoobs’ passing is the only line of duty death in the BCVFD’s 112 years of service.
