Happy 242nd birthday, U.S.A.!
The city marked Independence Day last Wednesday with traditional family barbecues and beach outings from the Rockaways to Coney Island—where Joey “Jaws” Chestnut gobbled up his own previous world record at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing 74 franks in 10 minutes—and punctuated the patriotic summer celebration with Macy’s 42nd annual 4th of July Fireworks Show that lit up the iconic Big Apple skyline with no less than 25 different colors.
Independence Day is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
