State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) is set to host a flag raising ceremony this Friday in Ozone Park in honor of area veterans of the Vietnam War.
Addabbo, who is a member of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, donated the flag, which will be raised high above the Medisys Health Network – Senior Health Center building’s clock tower on Atlantic Avenue near 92nd Street.
“I believe a flag raising ceremony is a respectful way to celebrate our great veterans who have traveled around the globe to protect the freedoms that we as Americans hold dear,” the senator said. “Although many troops were not looked on favorably when they first returned home from the horrors of war in Vietnam, it is never too late to thank a veteran for their service, and I hope this small token of our gratitude will brighten these veterans’ days during a time when the country should be honoring them.”
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 32 are set to take part in the ceremony. Area elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan); Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach); Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven); and City Councilmen Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) and Bob Holden (D-Middle Village), have also been invited to the event.

Friday’s event comes a week before National Vietnam War Veterans Day, which is observed every year on March 29.
