Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven) recently hosted his annual 102nd Precinct School Crossing Guard Breakfast at Avenue Diner on Jamaica Avenue.
Miller passed a resolution in the Assembly for March to be Crossing Guard Appreciation month. All crossing guards from the 102nd Precinct this year received a certificate of merit from Miller; and three guards—SCG Dennis Hon, SCG Esperanza Kotsias, and SCG Kelly Cooke—received plaques from the precinct “for going above and beyond the call of duty.” According to Miller, Hon has not missed a day of work since he was hired in 2016; Kotsias covers two schools and will be retiring in June after working 27 years as a crossing guard; and Cooke, who has been on the job less than a year, has become a favorite among many.
