With a boost from community groups, fifth-graders at MS 207 recently painted positive thoughts and messages on the bathroom stalls in the girls room, and primed the stalls in the boys bathroom on the 3rd Floor.
In the spirit of community partnership, the Kiwanis of Howard Beach donated the funds to help cover the cost of supplies, while Bobby Pace of Cross Bay Hardware donated supplies and discounts on purchases.
“This is sure to bring smiles to students’ faces and let them know they have support at all times,” said MS 207 art teacher and event organizer Serena Loiacono.
The school’s principal, Eileen Davies, was very supportive of the project and pleased with the results.
“It looks fantastic!” Davies exclaimed. “This day was a great bonding experience for the moms and their daughters that participated.”
State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) supplied pizza for the deserving volunteers. The senator said, “I was pleasantly surprised to see the progress on this project. I think it is really great” and took the time to deliver the pizza himself!
The lead organization for the project, Reach for the S.T.A.R.S., aims to spread positivity and to show young people in South Queens communities some support in unlikely places. To find out more about this project or others like it, call (718) 845-6956.
