State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) recently announced the launch of the State Summer reading Program.

This year’s Summer Reading Program theme is “Tails and Tales,” and libraries across the state are encouraging kids and teens to explore some new and exciting books this summer.

By continuing their learning throughout the summer, parents can help their children avoid what is commonly known as the “Summer Slide.” The Summer Slide is the loss of skills students gained during the school year while students are not in school for summer recess and it can affect students of every skill level and household income, Addabbo noted.

“As many of our local libraries are reopening — even if just for to-go services — it is the perfect time for students to check out what exciting options their libraries have to offer,” the senator said.

“A good book can take us to new, exciting worlds, transport us back in time and introduce us to historical figures,” Pheffer Amato added. “This Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to foster a lifelong love of reading and ensure that our kids keep learning once the school year ends.”

Parents who fill out the Summer Reading Form on Addabbo’s Senate website with their child’s information, along with three books they read this summer, will get their child a Certificate of Achievement from the senator. The deadline to submit the Summer Reading Form is September 1, 2021.
