DOT Launches Massive Queensboro Bridge Project

The City Department of Transportation this week kicked off its previously announced project to replace the upper deck of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. The construction will require long-term lane reductions on the upper roadway.

Work on the 113-year-old span began in earnest Monday morning when DOT staff implemented lane closures on the upper roadway’s Manhattan-bound side. This will continue six days a week—excluding Sundays—until further notice.

One Manhattan-bound lane will be closed 24 hours a day. The second Manhattan-bound lane will be closed during off-peak hours: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the day, and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. overnight.

On Friday nights, the second Manhattan-bound lane closure will extend into Saturday afternoons, from 8 p.m. on Fridays to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

During off-peak closures, the DOT will redirect upper-roadway traffic to the two current Queens-bound lanes, with one lane serving Manhattan-bound traffic and the other maintained for Queens-bound traffic.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to take mass transit or seek alternate routes for the duration of the critical infrastructure project, DOT officials said.
