In March, we celebrate Women’s History Month. And what better way to celebrate women’s history than to acknowledge a legislative body that is actually making history: the New York City Council.
For the first time, our esteemed 51-member panel—which can be traced to Dutch Colonial times when NYC was known as New Amsterdam—is composed mostly of women.

“The beauty of this particular Council—a true snapshot of New York City in 2022—is that our diversity will make us stronger,” said Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. “For the first time ever, this legislative body will have a majority of women serving as members. With citywide leadership overwhelmingly male, it’s crucial that women not only have a seat at the table, but we lead the way out of this crisis and toward a fair and inclusive recovery. Representation matters, not just because it will inspire the next generation of women leaders, but also because it will drive how we will govern moving forward.”
