The hot dog cart at the intersection of 156th Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard has been a street-treat staple in Howard Beach seemingly since time immemorial.

However, piles of garbage, vermin, unattended propane tanks, and full food carts left overnight, haven’t been.

After receiving dozens of tips from concerned neighbors and constituents regarding the decline in the quality of life at the intersection that unofficially welcomes motorists and pedestrians to Howard Beach, The Forum turned to City Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park), who immediately sprang into action.

In a matter of a couple of days, Ariola enlisted the aid of the 106th Precinct. Captain Jerome Bacchi, commanding officer of the 106, and Neighborhood Coordination Officer Pete Paese reached out to the owner of the cart and were both at the scene as it was towed away.

“The abandoned hot dog stand roped to an unregistered trailer on 156th Avenue off Cross Bay Boulevard was a dangerous condition and an eyesore in our community. There was garbage strewn all over the street and propane tanks left, unsecured, next to the trailer. Working together with the 106th Precinct as well as the Department of Sanitation regarding this condition, the trailer, its contents and the debris were removed,” Ariola told The Forum. “Maintaining the quality of life for the residents of this district is a priority for me. It is a promise that I made to this community and it is a promise I will keep.”
