Police early last Saturday morning responded to a 911 call of a car crash at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard in Richmond Hill. Upon arrival, officers observed Francisco Santiago unconscious and unresponsive with severe trauma to the head. EMS responded to the location and transported Santiago, 31, to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he later died.
Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Squad determined that Santiago was traveling westbound on Atlantic Avenue when he disobeyed a steady red signal and struck a 2016 Subaru Impreza, operated by a 30-year-old woman, which was in the process of turning left from eastbound Atlantic Avenue to northbound Lefferts Boulevard.
The woman remained on scene and the investigation is ongoing.
