State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Woodhaven) earlier this month presented Sr. Francis Marie Wystepek, principal of Divine Mercy Catholic Academy in Ozone Park, with a senate citation acknowledging 100 years of Catholic education at a party at Villa Russo.
The party was part of a larger celebration of Catholic education in Nativity-St. Stanislaus Parish. Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s school building opened in 1922 and St. Stanislaus B & M opened in 1926. The schools worked together for 80 years before they merged in 2007. In 2008, the unified schools became Divine Mercy Catholic Academy.
The party at Villa Russo was preceded by a Mass of thanksgiving celebrated at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.
