A school bus driver has been charged in an accident that killed a 73-year-old pedestrian in Ozone Park on Friday, police said on Saturday.
Maria Marte, 47, of East Elmhurst, has been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian/bicycle and failure to exercise due care.
On Friday, at approximately 7:25 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck in the vicinity of 107th Avenue and 86th Street, within the confines of the 106 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers observed a 73-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive. Emergeny Medical Services responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Further investigation by the City Police Department’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that the pedestrian was attempting to cross 86th Street, walking eastbound in the marked crosswalk, when she was struck by a 2013 Starcraft EC3 school bus, which was making a left turn from westbound 107th Avenue to southbound 86th Street. The operator of the school bus remained on scene. There were no other injuries reported as a result of the collision.
The incident remains under investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
