Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park) has officially announced the second annual Veterans’ Essay Contest, encouraging area students to submit an essay about a veteran in their lives. The winner of the contest will become “Councilperson for the Day” and will get lunch with the councilwoman along with an inside look at City Hall to see how NYC government operates.
“Our veterans have put their lives on the line for our freedoms, and these essays are great ways to ensure that their sacrifices are not forgotten by the next generation,” Ariola said.. “Last year we received so many wonderful essays about truly amazing men and women, and I look forward to once again reading about the individuals who have made such a tremendous impact both for our nation, and in the lives of our local young people.”
The contest is open to all middle and high school students from Council District 32, and essays must be submitted by May 15 to be eligible.
“We ask that students write about a veteran who is personally important to them,” Ariola said. “I look forward to reading all of the great essays that are sent in!”
Last year’s winner was Jason Youngberg of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy in Belle Harbor, who wrote about his uncle Michael Coughlin (U.S. Army, NYPD).
