Public Safety Remains Top Issue among District 23 Residents: Sullivan

Republican Assembly candidate Tom Sullivan on Friday said that public safety is the No. 1 concern of District 23 residents.

Appearing on 770 WABC’s “Cop Talk” podcast, Sullivan recounted a personal story that encapsulated the issue.

“This morning, I went to a local pizzeria that we frequent during the campaign late at night. An emotionally disturbed person smashed the window in front of these kids under the age of 8, screaming obscenities as if he was trying to get into the building,” the retired U.S. Army Reserves colonel said. “You have all individual stores, mom and pop stores, these folks have invested life savings for a job and a source of income, they put money into the storefronts to make it look nice, and are required to keep the streets clean and they do so. And then they have to put up with emotionally disturbed people, the criminal element. It makes it very hard to operate on these margins.”

Sullivan also commented on the ongoing legal troubles of Mayor Eric Adams.

“The mayor has lost trust and confidence,” he said. “That’s a sad state of affairs.”

Sullivan will square off against incumbent Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) on Nov. 5.

Assembly District 23 includes Howard Beach, Broad Channel, and parts of the Rockaways and Ozone Park.
