A mighty two-alarm fire on Sunday at the base of Call-A-Head in Broad Channel injured a civilian and a firefighter while destroying the headquarters of the purveyor of those ubiquitous blue and white port-a-potties.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze that broke out around 7 p.m. It took the Bravest a little over an hour to bring the inferno under control. A large section of Cross Bay Boulevard was shut down in both directions as a mammoth bright orange fireball and thick black smoke could be seen miles away.
Call-A-Head is New York’s largest portable sanitation company. It has been around for over 40 years, and services the five boroughs and Westchester, Nassau County, and Suffolk County.
