The new speed limit—20 mph—went into effect this week in Broad Channel.
In March, the City Department of Transportation announced that it would be implementing Regional Slow Zones in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The planned reductions followed the passage of Sammy’s Law, State legislation granting the City greater authority to decrease speed limits.
The Broad Channel Regional Slow Zone spans 0.16 square miles from East Sixth Road to West 22nd Road. This area had one traffic fatality and six severe injuries in the last five years, according to the DOT.
Area residents seemed to support the move.
