The Rockaway Beach surf and sand at Beach 116th Street will be open to the public this summer, City Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park) triumphantly announced on Tuesday.
“My office was preparing to stand shoulder to shoulder with members of the Rockaway Civic Association and the Beach 116th Merchants Association to protest the [U.S. Army Corps of Engineers] continued closure of the beach. After four long years, our merchants should not—and now will not—have to endure the closures any longer,” Ariola said. “Thank you to the Rockaway Civic and Beach 116th merchants for being there with me in this fight, and thank you to City Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa for ensuring that the sand and shoreline will be ready for the season.”
