Two City Correction officers recently were slashed by a notorious Rikers Island inmate wielding a scalpel, according to the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.
“Late [last Wednesday] night at approximately 11 p.m., inmate Sundance Oliver used a sharp ceramic scalpel to attack two of our Correction officers assigned to our Emergency Services Unit while preparing to transfer him inter-departmentally,” COBA President Benny Boscio said in a statement. “Without provocation, the inmate suddenly began slashing our officers across their heads and faces in what was the most violent assault on our members in years. One officer sustained a deep and long gash across his scalp requiring 17 stitches to close his wound, while the other officer received seven stitches across his face. This is the same inmate who has now attacked over 50 officers and civilians at Rikers in the span of just two years. These two officers are literally lucky to be alive.

The assailant has attacked over 50 officers and civilians at Rikers Island in the span of two years.
“This inmate, who should immediately be charged with attempted murder,” Boscio continued, “is the perfect example of the failures of our criminal justice system that has kept this violent assailant in our jails for years, while many of our elected officials have virtually eliminated serious consequences for inmates who commit violent crimes in jail… These are the extremely dangerous conditions our members face daily and they, just like the inmates in our custody, deserve to be safe.”
