Auto Theft on Rise in South Queens

Auto theft is on the rise in both the 102nd and 106th precinct, according to NYPD statistics.

Grand larceny auto is up 15.5 percent in the 102 in 2025 compared to the same period last year. GLA is up 21 percent in the 106 this year compared to the same period in 2024.

According to the NYPD, auto thefts are on the rise across the five boroughs. Vehicle owners are encouraged to:

  • Always turn off the ignition, remove your keys, and secure all valuables.
  • Close all windows and lock all doors.
  • Activate your vehicle’s alarm system.
  • Utilize a vehicle steering wheel lock.
  • Hide a GPS tracking device in the vehicle trunk or under the seat (e.g. Apple AirTag, Tile).
  • Consider Installing an ignition kill switch or battery disconnect switch (professional installation may be required).
  • Contact your dealer for free security software updates.

NYPD officials noted that Hyundai and Kia have upgraded their security software to combat auto thefts linked to the TikTok car theft challenge. These updates are free. Contact Hyundai and Kia to schedule an appointment.
