Nor’easter Causes Significant Damage throughout Borough

A wicked nor’easter on Sunday and Monday dumped over 2 inches of rain on The World’s Borough, whipping up wind gusts of 46 mph that caused significant damage and power outages in several Queens communities.

The winds uprooted trees, sending them crashing down onto parked cars and homes. The rain deluged neighborhoods, causing familiar flooding in areas like Howard Beach, Hamilton Beach, and the Rockaways. As of Monday, Howard Beach had received the most rainfall: 2.02 inches. John F. Kennedy International Airport reported absorbing 1.6 inches of rain.

On Saturday, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency in Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Nassau, Manhattan, Staten Island, Suffolk and Westchester.

“Due to the ongoing nor’easter, I’m declaring a State of Emergency for NYC, Long Island, & Westchester. We’re ready to assist local partners as damaging winds & heavy rain move in, with the potential for flooding & power outages. Stay vigilant & take steps now to prepare,” Hochul posted on Twitter on Saturday.

The storm also cancelled Monday’s planned Columbus Day parade in Manhattan. The weather event also caused hundreds of airport delays and cancellations across the northeast.

Some people were happy that the nor’easter punished NYC. According to the Friends of Rockaway Facebook group and the New York Post, a small group of surfers on Monday sought out towering swells in Rockaway Beach. Lifeguards are not on duty at City beaches. It appeared that all survived—with epic stories in tow.
