After a prisoner managed to slip out of his handcuffs and make a break for it at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Rockaway, police tracked him down and he was returned to custody by Saturday night, the NYPD said.

George Gordon, 36, was arrested and charged with shoplifting from a CVS pharmacy at Beach 20th Street around 6 p.m. Friday evening, according to the NYPD. After saying he was suffering from asthma, police brought Gordon to St. John’s – where he managed to escape around 11 p.m. after asking for water from an officer who was guarding him, police said.
The escapee apparently didn’t decide to go very far after fleeing, and police tracked him down and arrested him at 3-20 Beach 19th St. – located across the street from St. John’s.
