Nearly three thousand revelers last Sunday night bundled up and descended on Beach 144th Street and Neponsit Avenue for the 19th Annual Little North Pole spectacular to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Community leader Joe Mure produces the event each year with the help of dozens of volunteers. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the 2014 edition of LNP was postponed until Sunday due to inclement weather. Hosted by radio personalities Joe Causi and Goumba Johnny, last weekend’s blowout built on the parties of years past, boasting appearances by actors Tony Sirico and John Ventimiglia of “Sopranos” fame, and performances by acts including Carol Douglas and Bayside product Lucas Prata.

However, the star of the show—as he is every year—was Santa Claus, who was afforded a hero’s welcome, assisted by the Police and Fire departments. Children lined up for a chance to meet St. Nick, pose for pictures and receive a gift.

“I really like the presents,” said Seamus Mack, a Rockaway resident who was there with his father, James.

“We’ve been coming for years,” said James Mack, a Neponsit native. “It seems to be getting bigger and bigger every year.”

Bill Howley, with his 9-year-old daughter Tess at his side, heaped praise on Mure and his band of helpers.

“What Joe does for the community and juvenile diabetes is really unbelievable,” Howley said. “He really puts his time and effort into it.”

All donations from the event will go to JDRF.
