Two Drivers Die in Early-Morning Accidents Sunday

Two drivers were killed in separate early-morning wrecks on Sunday when one car barreled down an off ramp and a motorcycle hit the back of a street cleaner.

Police said the first accident occurred when the driver of a BMW lost control while exiting the Van Wyck Expressway at Atlantic Ave. around 2:30 a.m.

He crashed into a tree in front of Jamaica Hospital in Richmond Hill and the car ignited.

Police said speed was likely a factor.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, but he has yet to be identified because the body was burned beyond recognition, police said. The cause is under investigation.

The New York Daily News reported a motorcyclist was also killed when he rear-ended a street sweeping truck on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway near the Queens Boulevard exit.

The 2:30 a.m. crash occurred as traffic slowed in the area for another accident. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and also has not been identified.
