Luz Fernandez-Aviles, a Gulf War veteran and Jackson Heights resident, was recently inducted into the State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame by Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst).
The HOF pays tribute to New Yorkers “whose gallantry in the U.S. Armed Forces is complemented by their service to their community,” Peralta noted.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to New York State Senator Jose Peralta and his staff for honoring me, a Gulf War Veteran. It means a lot to me to know that my service to this great country has been recognized. I am truly grateful for this honor,” Fernandez-Aviles said.
A first-generation American born to Dominican parents, Fernandez-Aviles joined the Army Reserve in July 1988 and was deployed to Saudi Arabia with her unit, the 142nd Transportation Det. FORSCOM FC, on August 1990 for a little more than eight months. Fernandez-Aviles worked as a 77F Petroleum Supply Specialist. During her service in the military, she received the Army Commendation Medal (Gulf War, May 1991); Certificate of Achievement (Gulf War April 1991 and June 1991); Army Achievement Medal (Republic of Korea, June 1993, and 146th General Supply Co. Ft. Totten, New York, October 1995); New York State Assembly Citation on June 2008; and State Senate Liberty Award on June 2008.

Fernandez-Aviles was honorably discharged in February 1997. She continues her work with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2813 in Woodside and indicated that she wants to become a post commander.
