The deadly crash that killed one woman and left two others injured has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old Ozone Park resident, Alfaheed Odesanya, charged with criminally negligent homicide.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Archer Avenue and Guy R. Brewer Boulevard in Jamaica at about 11:05 p.m. The defendant was driving a 2018 white Mercedes Benz northbound on Guy Brewer Blvd heading for Archer Avenue at a high rate of speed. Sources say he sped through a steady red light, striking the passenger side of a 2015 Hyundai traveling east on Archer Avenue. The passenger in the rear of the Hyundai suffered head trauma in the collision and she was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
A second passenger in the car, along with the driver, were also taken to the hospital. The passenger has a possible spinal fracture and the driver was being treated for head and neck injuries.
Immediately following the collision, Odesanya jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene. He was caught and arrested shortly after. The defendant admitted that he was driving in excess of 55 to 60 mph and that he ignored the yellow light and kept driving through the steady red into the intersection. He also stated that he “was scared and didn’t know what to do, so I took off running.”
“This was a horrible collision that could have easily been prevented. The defendant in this case is alleged to have exceeded the speed limit and then continued through a solid red light,” noted DA Brown. “The car crashed into another vehicle – killing the passenger in that car and injuring the driver and another passenger. The defendant now faces a lengthy term of incarceration.”
If convicted, Odesanya faces up to seven years in prison.
