Even a paltry voter turnout Tuesday couldn’t stop State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) as he cruised to victory in the Democratic primary for the 15th Senatorial District seat—a position he has held since Jan. 1, 2009.
With nearly 99 percent of precincts reporting, Addabbo earned 57 percent of the vote; Japneet Singh garnered 29 percent; while Albert Baldeo came in third place with 14 percent.
Less than 7,000 voters cast ballots in the race.
With his eyes on the general election in November, Addabbo took time out on Wednesday to thank his supporters for helping him secure another political victory.
“I am proud to be named the winner of the Democratic Primary for the 15th Senate District, a district I have represented since 2008. It was a tough campaign and I couldn’t do it without the help and support of my family, staff, and amazing community partners. It is through all of our hard work that we are able to celebrate this victory together,” Addabbo added. “However, the work is not over. We will regroup and focus on the upcoming General Election this November, and I look forward to representing the people of the 15th District in Albany.”
Addabbo is a lifelong resident of Ozone Park. He attended Nativity BVM School and Archbishop Molloy High School. He later received degrees from St. John’s University and Touro Law School. Addabbo practiced law for ten years at Addabbo and Greenberg before being elected to lead the 32nd District of the City Council in 2001. He was re-elected three times and served as a council member for eight years. Addabbo, his wife, Dawn, and daughters, Alexis and Arianna, reside in the Tudor Village section of Ozone Park.
