The man who ran a drug distribution network in Forest Hills and helped smuggle narcotics into the United States earned himself 30 years of jail time. A federal judge handed down the sentence on Friday, March 2.
Judge Dora L. Irizarry sentenced Enis Djurkovic after he pleaded guilty to distributing more than 7,000 kilograms of marijuana, distributing 25 kilograms of cocaine, laundering millions of dollars and obstructing justice, according to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of New York.
The federal investigation revealed that between 2000 and 2009, Djurkovic ran a network in Forest Hills that distributed thousands of pounds of smuggled marijuana and cocaine.
He also played a part in bringing those drugs to the U.S.
Djurkovic, 32, was a leader in a smuggling ring that brought thousands of pounds of narcotics through the Akwesasne Native American Reservation on the U.S.-Canada border.
The investigation uncovering the depth of his involvement spanned years.
The Long Island District Office of the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force, the Nassau County Police Department, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the United States Attorney’s Office all took part in the process.
After Djurkovic had been convicted of trafficking, he tried to stop the process by threatening U.S. District Court Judge Sandra L. Townes and the DEA prosecutors leading the investigation.
He used his sister to deliver a threatening note, which was traced back to him by the United States Marshals Service and the DEA. Obstruction of justice was then tacked onto his charges, which he pleaded guilty to as well.
Judge Irizarry also imposed a $2,000,000 fine on Djurkovic.
