City Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park) partnered with the City Department of Sanitation and the Rockaway Beach Civic Association on Saturday to host a compost giveaway near the new Rockaway Beach Amphitheater at Beach 95th Street and Shore Front Parkway.
“The DSNY has rolled out a tremendous composting program right here in Queens, and events like this allow our communities to be the beneficiaries of that program,” said Ariola, pictured here with District 32 Constituent Liaison Robby Schwach (l. to r.), Rockaway Beach Civic Association President Bridget Klapinski, Ariola, DSNY Bureau of Community Affairs Director Joan Byrne-Daly, and Rockaway Beach Civic Association Treasurer Grace Miller. “Not only are we removing thousands of pounds of waste from our landfills, but we are helping New Yorkers to plant their gardens which help to beautify our city and provide healthy food to our residents.”
In total, the event saw 176 forty-pound bags of compost given out to nearly one hundred area residents, as well as to three community gardens and a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
