Later this month, State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Woodhaven) will host an informational event in Ozone Park focusing on domestic violence education, prevention, and victim resources.

The Ozone Tudor Civic Association-supported event is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Party Affairs, located at 85-05 Pitkin Avenue.

Addabbo noted that the event will feature guest speakers from Safe Horizon and the NYPD Domestic Violence Unit who will give attendees an opportunity to engage in discussions and interactive exercises regarding prevention and support strategies.

Domestic violence, also known as Intimate Partner Violence, affects millions of people in the United States each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. IPV can result in injuries and even death, the CDC noted. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are abused by an intimate partner in the United States, according to St. Jude House. For one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.  Only about 1 out of 5 IPV victims with physical injuries seeks professional medical treatment, according to the Emory University School of Medicine. In 2021, 34 percent of female murder victims were killed by an intimate partner, compared to 6 percent of male murder victims, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

“Domestic violence is a universal issue that affects individuals and families in every corner of our community,” Addabbo said. “By coming together this month, we can break the silence, provide essential resources, and show survivors that they are not alone. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone.”
