The State Senate recently passed legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Woodhaven), to establish a Problem Gambling Advisory Council. The bill aims to address the increasing need for problem gambling awareness and ensure improved access to essential prevention and treatment services across the state.
“As we continue to expand gaming opportunities in New York, it is our responsibility to provide critical resources for individuals and families impacted by problem gambling,” said Addabbo, chairman of the Senate Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee. “This advisory council will bring together experts, stakeholders, and advocates to enhance awareness, improve treatment accessibility, and implement effective strategies to support those in need.”

“[I]t is our responsibility to provide critical resources for individuals and families impacted by problem gambling,” said Sen. Addabbo.
- Assessing current problem gambling programs and identifying gaps in services
- Recommending best practices for prevention, education, and treatment.
- Enhancing coordination among state agencies, gaming operators, and community organizations. Providing annual reports to the governor and Legislature with data-driven recommendations.
With the rapid popularity of mobile sports betting and other gaming options in New York, the creation of this advisory council is a proactive step toward balancing industry growth with responsible gaming initiatives.
“Problem Gambling Awareness Month is the perfect time to reinforce our commitment to supporting individuals affected by gambling addiction,” Addabbo added. “This bill is an important step forward in ensuring that, as gaming evolves in New York, we prioritize the health and well-being of our residents.”
