State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Woodhaven) is set to host his free spring electronic waste recycling event this Sunday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Forest Park Bandshell Parking Lot, where the Lower East Side Ecology Center will be collecting old and broken electronics. For the first time, PaintCare will be on hand to collect old paint.
Electronics that will be accepted during the event are:
- Computers (laptops & desktops, servers, mainframes);
- Monitors (CRT and flat screen);
- Handheld devices (smartphones, tablets, MP3 players, e-readers, etc.);
- Network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.);
- Peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, cords, chargers, etc.);
- Components (hard drives, CD-ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies, etc.);
- Printers, scanners, fax-machines, etc.;
- TVs, VCRs, DVRs, DVD & Blu-ray Players;
- Digital Converter Boxes, Cable/Satellite Receivers;
- Audio-visual equipment (cameras, microphones, etc.);
- Video-game consoles and accessories;
- Cell phones, pagers, PDAs;
- Stereo equipment;
- Landline phones/answering machines;
- Extension cords.

“When electronics and paint are not properly recycled, they can end up in our landfills, releasing harmful chemicals into the soil and water, which can be quite damaging to the environment and public health,” Sen. Addabbo said.
Electronics that will NOT be accepted during the event are:
- Batteries of any kind;
- Floppy disks/VHS tapes/CDs/DVDs/cassette tapes;
- Smoke detectors;
- Medication;
- Any hazardous materials or paint;
- Household appliances.
The types of paint that will be accepted during the event are:
- Interior and exterior architectural paints: latex, acrylic, water-based, alkyd, oil-based, enamel (including textured coatings)
- Deck coatings, floor paints (including elastomeric)
- Primers, sealers, undercoaters
- Stains
- Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, urethanes (single component)
- Waterproofing concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellents (not tar or bitumen-based)
- Metal coatings, rust preventatives
- Field and lawn paints
The types of paint that will NOT be accepted during the event are:
- Paint thinners, mineral spirits, solvents
- Aerosol coatings
- Auto and marine paints
- Art and craft paints
- Caulking compounds, epoxies, glues, adhesives
- Paint additives, colorants, tints, resins
- Wood preservatives (containing pesticides)
- Roof patch and repair
- Asphalt, tar and bitumen-based products
- 2-component coatings
- Deck cleaners
- Traffic and road marking paints
- Industrial Maintenance (IM) coatings
- Original Equipment Manufacturer (shop application) paints and finishes
