The 177 marijuana dispensaries across the five boroughs generated $9.98 million in tax revenue for the City in the first half of 2025, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

There are 41 dispensaries in Queens. The rest of the Big Apple breaks down like this: Manhattan (64), Brooklyn (51), the Bronx (15), and Staten Island (6).

According to DiNapoli, all state counties and New York City are eligible to receive adult-use cannabis tax revenue from the sale of AUC products sold within their jurisdiction. AUC retailers must file tax returns and remit payment of taxes due on a quarterly basis with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. The Office of the State Comptroller anticipates that most of the revenue associated with these payments will be distributed to local governments in January, April, July and October. OSC is responsible for making payments to counties and New York City, while counties are responsible for distributing a percentage of AUC tax revenue to cities, towns and villages that host a retail AUC dispensary within the county.

The Cannabis Law, enacted in 2021, legalized recreational cannabis in the Empire State. There are currently 449 adult-use cannabis dispensaries across New York that have generated more than $57 million in tax revenue.
