State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Woodhaven) earlier this month partnered with the Queens County Bird Club and the Parks Department to host two bird walking tours in Forest Park. Originally planned as one 60-minute walk, a second walk was added to accommodate the demand.

The walks were led by Ian Resnick, president of the Queens County Bird Club, along with two other club members: Akilah Lewis and Coco Huang.

Some of the birds seen on the walk were the Golden-crowned Kinglet, Ovenbird, Chimney Swift, American Robin, White-breasted nuthatch, Red-bellied woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Blue Jay, a warbler, and sparrows.

According to Addabbo, participants saw many birds, along with chipmunks and squirrels. They also absorbed the rich green environment of the park and listened to the various birds chirping and other natural sounds.

Spanning 543 acres, Forest Park is the third-largest park in Queens and the tenth-largest greenspace in the Big Apple.

“My office team and I work every day on serious issues, so it was a good, slight change of pace to sponsor an event that would bring some people enjoyment,” Addabbo said. “Forest Park is a natural treasure in our district, and these bird-watching tours are a chance for residents to connect with the environment, learn about local wildlife, and advocate for preserved green spaces for future generations. I would like to thank the Queens County Bird Club and the Parks Department for their support.”
