A small band of armed thieves in search of cash and gold got a different payoff than they expected during a home invasion in Ozone Park early Tuesday morning.

One of them wound up in Jamaica Hospital with a gunshot wound that came from his own weapon.
Ghulam Kahn was soundly sleeping with his wife Joreena, when he woke to find two masked men standing over their bed and pointing a gun at him.

“One of them was screaming,” Khan told The Forum. “Give me the money! Give me the money!” The 43-year-old homeowner said initially he thought someone in his family was playing a practical joke on them, but he quickly realized it was no joke when one of the thieves choked his wife and put a hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming.

“I heard my wife screaming ‘they’re gonna kill us. They’re gonna kill us,’” Kahn said. In an effort to to silence his wife, he urged her to be quiet—“they [ the men] have guns and will shoot us if you don’t shut up.” But he said, she just continued to scream.

Kahn said that one suspect pointed the gun at his wife and another held him down At one point the gunman attempted to pass the weapon to his accomplice and Kahn saw an opening. “I thought to myself that they would kill us anyway, so I grabbed for the gun.”

A struggle ensued and Kahn wrestled the gun free; the fight continued with the robber repeatedly biting Kahn. “Twice the gun went off,” said Kahn. “I tried to pull the trigger again but it jammed.” One suspect was hit with a shot in the leg and was subdued by Kahn’s wife and other family members who raced to the couple’s aid when they were awakened by the commotion in the house.

As many as two other suspects escaped through a front window leaving one male, approximately 21-years old behind. Sources say that man has as many as 20 prior arrests. Police are still looking for the others involved in the incident. They fled in a tan colored SUV.

GWDC if elected, all in an effort to help the growth of Woodhaven.

“When I get to Albany, I’m going to fight for the funding because I’m not coming home till they get the check,” Ulrich said. “That’s the way we’ve done it in the City Council; that’s the way I’ll do it in the State Senate.”
