We have thus far refrained from mentioning Huma Abedin in this space in connection with her husband, Anthony Weiner. But when Huma emerged from her cocoon on Tuesday at a press conference and abandoned her privacy, we accepted her informal invitation to offer comment.
It seems once again, Abedin is standing by her man as she let us all know, when she read a prepared statement: “I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him,” and to Huma we say good for you—or not. That is truly not our business, nor should it have any influence with the New York voting public in whether or not they support Anthony Weiner in his bid for mayor.
We realize there are those out there who don’t think that Weiner’s past transgressions should disqualify him from running and to those folks we say: Think again. Clearly, if you don’t see that it is inappropriate for a man who holds public office and who seeks a higher one to tweet pictures of his penis. Do you not see that as the ultimate illustration of bad judgment?
Even when he appeared as Carlos Danger, the handle Weiner allegedly used in sex chats last summer, he could not help but let his fellow sexters know his real persona, an abuse of power in the most distasteful form imaginable. More bad judgment.
Whether or not one considers Anthony Weiner’s sexual preferences as acceptable or perverse is not of issue. What should concern the public is the fact that his transgressions are surrounded by character traits that make him everything the mayor of this city should not be. His actions have proven him to be both disingenuous and duplicitous. Why should New Yorkers have to listen to his apologies over and over?
Two years ago he stood before the public, a brilliant political future in ruin, and pledged his undying apologies—to his wife and family as well as colleagues and mentors, offering promises to make up to his constituents, to the beloved public who repeatedly placed their trust in him—and now again the story has changed.
Anthony Weiner and his wife are making fools of anyone who will entertain their embarrassing political agenda(s). It’s time the nonsense stops. We have difficult enough decisions to make at the polls for this election, but Weiner’s name is one we should not see anywhere near a ballot.
Take a hike Mr. Weiner. Get off the ballot and don’t send Carlos Danger in your place. We call for you to step out of a race you don’t belong in.
