Scholarships Offered for Students and Nurses

High school seniors worried about the rising cost of college can receive some help thanks to Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven).

Students from the 38th Assembly District, which covers portions of Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, Ozone Park, South Ozone Park, Glendale, Maspeth, Ridgewood and Middle Village, can apply for a $1,500 scholarship from the New York Conference of Italian-American Legislators.

“Given the high costs of college, every opportunity must be given to local students and their working families to meet their required expenses,” said Miller. “I highly recommend that students … apply to the conference for these scholarships so that they hopefully secure as much extra help with their expenses as possible.”

The scholarship committee is looking at students’ grade point average, athletic involvement, interest in pursuing a higher education, involvement in the community and financial need.

Requests are due to Miller’s office by April 19. For more information about the scholarship and to submit a request, call Miller’s office at 718-805-0950.

State Senator Joe Addabbo (D-Howard Beach) is also offering scholarship offers for state nurses.

Addabbo is urging registered nurses and licensed practical nurses to apply for $2,000 scholarships to help them pay for educational-related expenses.

The Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship is a fund for state nurses that wish to further their careers in home and community-based care. Applications are due by June 1 and scholarships are awarded in August, in time for the fall semester.

“Nurses are essential to providing high quality care in home and community-based care settings and the demand for nurses is growing because of an aging population and consumer preference to receive care home,” said Addabbo. “This scholarship fund provides critical financial support for nurses looking to maximize opportunities in this growing market.”

Interested applicants can apply at ednascholarship.org. For more information, contact Addabbo’s office at 718-738-1111 or 718-497-1630.
