After the terrorist attacks of September 11, Middle Village and Maspeth residents banded together to honor those lost in the tragedy. The group became the 9/11 Candlelight Vigil Committee (CVC) and has held an annual memorial on September 11 at Juniper Valley Park.
With the 10th Anniversary of the attacks three months away, the committee is working with the city Parks Department to build a memorial garden at the park. Lynda Metzger, a committee member, told Communities of Maspeth and Elmhurst Together (COMET) that the memorial would provide the community a place to remember 9/11 victims year-round.
To make the CVC members’ dreams a reality, funds must still be raised to build the memorial. The committee has been contacting local businesses, schools and civic organizations asking for help.
“Together as a community we can ensure the life changing events on September 11, 2001 are never forgotten and to remember and honor those who perished, those who responded and those members of our Armed Forces who are still fighting to preserve our freedom,” the committee said in a letter sent to the community.
