Local Pols Bring Tax Help to Nabe

With many residents still suffering from a down economy, area politicians held a free tax lien event for those suffering overdue debts from city and state liens.

State Senator Joe Addabbo (D-Howard Beach), Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven) and city Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village) held the event last Thursday at PS 91 in Glendale.

Representatives from the city Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Finance and Department of Housing and Preservation assisted residents with overdue property taxes, water bills and tax lien debts.

“Many New Yorkers have been subject to liens put on their properties due to late payments and very often, don’t know what to do when this happens,” Miller said. “There are options out there for those who can’t pay their debts in full and this event aided in that process.”

Addabbo said that about 50 people came for the free event “in order to obtain help in avoiding the sale and worse, foreclosure due to nonpayment.”
