Editorial: Tougher Gun Laws Needed

There was a spat of shootings this weekend that have recently become very rare in the city. Mayor Michael Bloomberg used the opportunity to once again call for stricter federal gun control policies.

We at The Forum believe every law-abiding citizen has the right to bear arms. It’s in the Second Amendment. That doesn’t, however, mean restrictions on the sales of guns need to disappear.

Whether it’s waiting an extra couple of days to finalize a purchase or following all the laws regarding weapon concealment, tighter regulations help ensure guns don’t fall into the wrong hands.

Obviously, even with these laws, criminals will still be able to purchase weapons on the streets. But the answer isn’t for everyone else to buy guns. The answer is to call for stricter enforcement, harsher penalties and an increased police presence.

We applaud the Mayor for taking a practical view on gun control.
