Cleaver-wielding Man to Stay Behind Bars

A Flushing man was arraigned on May 31 on five charges after he allegedly assaulted his wife with a meat cleaver.

Kang L. Wang, 53, was ordered to head to prison without bail as he was charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and one-count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will return to court on June 14.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that, according to the charges, on May 23 at approximately 5:40 a.m., Wang struck his wife, Hui Zhen Liu, several times on her head and body with a meat cleaver, which caused many wounds and bleeding. Liu was admitted in critical condition when she was taken to a local hospital. She had multiple open wounds and a possible brain injury. Liu also sustained about 60 stab wounds from the beating. Their 22-year-old son also allegedly witnessed Wang attacking Liu. The incident happened at the couple’s apartment on Parsons Boulevard in Flushing.

“This is a disturbing case in which a woman has allegedly been brutally attacked by her husband,” Brown said. “Now, the victim remains in critical condition and the defendant is facing serious charges that could, and should, lead to a lengthy prison sentence if he is convicted.”
