Progress Made in Glendale Fight for Zip Code

Two local politicians are celebrating a small victory in their quest to distinguish Glendale from Ridgewood with two separate ZIP codes.

“Today we are here to announce that the Postal Service has finally heard our message and is making some changes,” said Congressman Bob Turner (R-Queens), referring to the United States Postal Services’s decision to grant Glendale a “Preferred Last Line” distinction.

The new status means that the Postal Service will recognize Glendale as a “preferred community name for the identified area.” Now any mail sender can write Glendale, instead of Ridgewood, on an envelope or package and be assured that it will reach its destination. Before, the Glendale label was often rejected when paired with the Ridgewood area code.

However, the USPS did not fulfill the Glendale community’s request for a completely separate ZIP code.

Turner, along with Assemblyman Michael Miller (D-Glendale), filed a formal application with the USPS in May requesting a unique ZIP code because Tuner says sharing one “has created numerous, and sometimes dangerous, problems for Glendale residents such as delays in medication delivery and first responder services.”

Although the lawmakers are pleased with the on-going progress of the issue, the battle to establish Glendale’s own zip code wages on.
“…there is still a great deal to be done,” said Turner, “we will continue to fight to correct this ongoing issue for the residents of Glendale.”
Turner and Miller argue that the vacant 11384 ZIP code can be used to serve Glendale, and they intend to appeal the current decision
