Man Accused of Selling Modems for Free Internet

Craigslist has been used to nab another alleged criminal.

According to the Queens District Attorney’s Office, Andres Saldariaga had been charged with forgery and theft of services for allegedly selling cloned wireless modems on the website craigslist.org, promising unlimited, free wireless Internet.

The 22-year-old Long Island City resident advertised the products as compatible with Time Warner Cable and other Internet providers and devoid of any monthly fees.

“By using on these devices an individual could unlawfully receive free cable Internet service without permission of the Internet service provider,” said District Attorney Richard Brown.

Saldariaga’s criminal complaint alleges that between March 2011 and August of this year, he sold modems to investigators on four separate occasions – two times to a investigator working for Time Warner Cable and twice to a detective with the District Attorney’s office.

The price of modems increased overtime from $150 to $200.

Following his arrest, police recovered an additional 26 modems in Saldariaga’s home and car.

If convicted, Saldariaga faces up to seven years in prison, but is currently on release without bail.
