After two weeks on the run, an unlikely feathery fugitive has been caught.

Kevin, a resident peacock from John Bowne High School’s Agricultural Center, has been roaming the streets of Kew Gardens Hills for more than two weeks evading capture. The school has gotten numerous tips from neighbors about sightings on the streets and rooftops but the five-year-old peacock still managed to keep authorities on a wild goose chase. Assistant Principle at the Agricultural Program, Steve Perry, confesses that Kevin has been able to outrun police and animal control close to ten times.

“We worked very closely with animal control but every time, Kevin would evade us,” said Perry.

Last Friday, Kevin was finally caught when animal handlers resorted to a three man operation. It took two officers from Animal Care and Control of New York City and a wildlife handler, Bobby Horvath, to corner the bird in between two tall buildings and finally net him.

His return to John Bowne comes just in time for the start of classes.

“We are thrilled to have him back,” said Perry. “The timing couldn’t be better because the kids all come back tomorrow and he’ll be able to greet them as they come,” he added.

To ensure that Kevin doesn’t attempt any more escapes, his wings were clipped. After being home for the first time in weeks, the bold peacock will be free to roam the school’s 3.8-acre field once more.
